Chapter 8

The kiss in the secluded garden behind Leandros’ villa put me in a deep turmoil where my feelings tug towards different, conflicting directions. My rational mind is at a loss for what to do next. It's pretty clear that my attraction for Leandros is mutual. After we intertwined our minds for a brief moment, we were both aware of each other's feelings. It makes it all the harder to pretend that kiss never happened. It also makes it much harder to continue to ignore how much he intrigues and entices me and how incredibly drawn I am to him. I'm not even sure if I want to ignore it.

But I still have research to conduct, and United World is expecting a research document on minotaur culture as well as building a diplomatic relationship of sorts. My academic pride also tells me not to get distracted from my research, thinking about the acclaim and respect it would bring me to be the first person to write about this reclusive community from within. So many myths and theories exist about minotaurs, but they are all speculative and based on ancient texts, half-remembered stories, or incomplete historical accounts. I have a chance to really correct the historical record. Not to mention the newly discovered telepathic bond. I have no plans of betraying Leandros’ trust by revealing minotaurs' telepathic ability to the larger public, but I allow myself to indulge in the fantasy of what would happen if I were allowed to. That would be the scientific discovery of the decade, no question about it, maybe even the century.

Another worry I have is my friends. Gemma, Mercy, and Neneh are more than a little apprehensive about my decision to stay in the Enclave full-time until our work is done. They are returning to The Corinthian at the end of each day and coming back with Ermis in the mornings. I understand their concern about my prolonged stay. After all, despite seeming like good hosts, the Enclave and the people within it are still in uncharted waters. Staying here longer than needed and without a clear exit strategy if things go south is something that makes my friends rather nervous.

If I were to tell them about our passionate kiss in the garden, they might understand why I don’t think I'm in any danger, but I can’t tell them that without letting them in on the secret. I can’t really explain to them how I know Leandros won’t hurt me, or how I know deep down that he’d never allow anyone else to do so either. I'm also trying to navigate things with Leandros. The minotaur has a way to make himself friendly, but at the same time, hard to approach if not on his terms. It’s not something he does on purpose, I'm sure, but after we kissed in the garden, he politely showed me to my room and excused himself. I don’t need telepathy to understand that he's concerned about things progressing too fast or crossing a professional line.
